  "The location and hospitality of the Chieftain Motor Inn, and the long miles of unspoiled river make this place the best spot for summer rowing in the country. The nature around you makes rowing not only a perfect physical activity, but also a very unique spiritual experience"

:: Rowing

The Upper Valley area of New Hampshire and Vermont is a great place for rowing, a sport specifically known as Sculling. Don't take our word for it: the US Olympic men's quad team and Black Bear Sculling camp both used the Chieftain Inn to train in 2008. A premier site for rowers' this part of the Connecticut River is extremely tranquil allowing you to view wildlife. Surrounding the river on either shore are picturesque pasture, forests, mountains and shear cliffs, making it a rower's paradise.

The Chieftain is so well known among rower's it has been featured in two books written about this sport, The Amateur by David Halberstam and Assault on Lake Casitar by Brad Alan Lewis.
